Since Mahahual is so new to tourism it is worth taking note of nearby quality accommodations in sinc with the natural environment. Balamku is a find, fitting in nicely with its laid-back coastal location.
Balamku is one of the best Inns in the area with comfortable rooms, congenial hosts and a nice sandy tanning area with plenty of room to spread out. Here you can lounge, get some sun or gaze out on the Caribbean in peace and tranquility. This is a beautiful natural setting where it's common to see egrets, pelicans and birds of prey just off shore. The surroundings are intimate, well suited for those seeking an escape from impersonal all-inclusive resorts.
Rooms are spacious and comfortable, decorated with Guatemalan textiles and furnished with native hardwood furniture. Louvered glass windows can be opened to aid the sea breeze and all rooms have a ceiling fan. The thatched roofs above the second level rooms help keep things cool. Together with the ceiling fan the interiors stay quite pleasant even in summer. Internet is available in the office and in most rooms if you bring your laptop. There is a small rental card fee for this service. They also have a gift shop with art and clothing. Books on the local birds and animals, as well as good novels are provided for your enjoyment. Watching videos in your room can also be arranged.
Activities and groups Balamku can be reserved in its entirety making it great for retreats, family reunions or groups who want a private place for their exclusive use. Activities include snorkeling just off shore or scuba diving by boat (nearby dive shop). Dive trips to Banco Chinchorro can be arranged as can kayaking excursions, deep sea fishing, horseback riding, birding, hiking and trips to Mayan ruins. Or just take it easy, your time at Balamku will be as relaxed or adventurous as you choose.
Meal options Currently, Balamku Inn only provides breakfast in the dining room (soon-to-be restaurant/bar). Breakfast is included in your daily rate, with your choice of fresh fruits, yogurt, home-made breads, granola, eggs, and their specialty coffees.
