As street food goes the sweetest of all, churros!
Wandering the streets of the Yucatan be it in Cancun Centro, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid or Merida the smells, sights and sounds of street food tantalizes curious visitors. Tacos are easily identifiable as well as corn on the cob slathered with mayo and chili powder, but one of the yummiest treats on the streets is churros. Who can resist fried dough with sugar?
History of the churro
There are several countries that want to lay claim to this Latin American favorite: China, Portugal, and of course Spain who says it is the shepards who created this crunchy-chewy donut-like delicacy. But it is said that the Spanish conquistadors brought churros to the Americas. In Mexico, this guilty pleasure can be found freshly fried and covered in cinnamon sugar, chocolate syrup or dulce de leche or “cajeta” as it is called.
Calories on vacation don’t count! When you are here and you see a street vendor with churros at least stop and get a bag to share and enjoy one of Mexico’s favorite street foods.
