I think this is the number one vacation question we receive on email. What is the best city in the Riviera Maya? And my answer is the same to everyone. It really depends on the type of vacation you want to have. Each city in the Riviera Maya has a different vibe, and each city offers some great benefits. No two cities are alike, which is what makes the Riviera Maya so special. No matter which city you choose, you will be close to all local attractions, cultural sites, and have quick access to the Yucatan.
Puerto Morelos in the Riviera Maya
Puerto Morelos is a small beachside village. Being the closest destination to the Cancun airport, some visitors appreciate the 20 minute drive to and from the airport. Others love the protected Nature Reserve in the Caribbean, others love that the village closes down by 11 pm. The town center is within walking distance of any vacation rental and the beach is no further than three blocks from any home.
Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya
Playa del Carmen is the midpoint between Cancun and Tulum. This city is used by many vacationers as their main vacation hub. Playa is a beachfront city that is known for its shopping and restaurants along 5th Ave, a pedestrian walkway over 4 kms long. It is a fun, vibrant well known city that has a host of different neighborhoods that will keep you busy exploring.
Puerto Aventuras in the Riviera Maya
If you like boats, and have dreams of vacationing in a marina, this could be your destination. Global boaters anchor in Puerto Morelos as they sail the Caribbean. The small city is built around the marina and the downtown lines the marina board walk. Puerto Aventuras is unlike any other city in the Riviera Maya, which is what makes it attractive to both residents and visitors.
Akumal in the Riviera Maya
Well this is home for us, so we have lots of great things to say about Akumal. The beach, the small community, the beachside bars and restaurants are what makes Akumal a great destination for your vacation.
Tulum in the Riviera Maya
This bohemian town does have some of the best beaches along the coast. We have spent many memorable moments in Tulum and we do love this destination. As time passes, the town gets more eclectic and more diverse but that bohemian vibe remains.
Experience everything the Riviera Maya has to offer!
So our conclusion is, there is not one city in the Riviera Maya that is THE BEST. They are all the best. Though we live in Akumal, we love the beaches of the Tulum, the Eurochic feel to Playa del Carmen, and the small town happiness found in Puerto Morelos. What is your favorite city in the Riviera Maya, or are you like us, loving every city and know every city is worth visiting.
