A top highlight of any beach vacation: seeing the sunrise or sunset over the water. Due to its location on Mexico’s eastern coast, the entire Cancun and Riviera Maya region offers ocean sunrises, not sunsets… with the exception of local islands like Isla Mujeres. Here, the island’s famous North Beach faces northwest towards dramatic sunsets over the Caribbean Sea, and tourists and locals come by every evening to watch the sunset. Some people lay out blankets on the sand, others hang out at beach clubs with some drinks, some wade into the water, and even yachts and boats line up just off the coast to get the best view of that moment when the sun hits the Caribbean Sea.
If you’re craving a full sunset experience during your Isla Mujeres vacation, one of North Beach’s restaurants goes beyond just drinks and a view once a week: Green Demon Beach Club.
Sunday Sunsets at Green Demon
Green Demon hosts live reggae bands on the beach every Sunday evening. On late afternoon each Sunday, a small crowd begins to gather at this North Beach restaurant and beach club, ordering drinks from the lounge beds and wood tables while the band sets up. By the time the sun turns a deep orange and dips over the horizon, Green Demon’s beach area has an audience of all ages swaying to the tunes of live reggae music. Typically it’s a local band playing, although sometimes reggae groups from other countries come by to perform. Once the stars come out, the crowd is usually full-on dancing on the sand to the band’s more upbeat songs.
Full Moon Gatherings on Isla Mujeres
In addition to its weekly sunset concerts, Green Demon Beach Club also hosts one Full Moon Gathering each month. These events take place, of course, on the night of the full moon, beginning just before sunset and ending at midnight. Typically, the Full Moon Gatherings also feature a live reggae band along with drinks and dancing on the beach, combining North Beach’s unbelievable sunsets with a night under the moonlight.
To discover the rest of Isla Mujeres before sunset, make sure to rent a golf cart so you can drive around the island’s southern coasts! Here’s our guide on the best route to take when exploring Isla Mujeres by golf cart.
