With a secluded location at the northeastern edge of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the island of Holbox provides a haven for travelers seeking white sand beaches in a laid-back, small-town setting.
Holbox Island offers calming beaches and spectacular Gulf Coast scenery paired with vibrant sunsets. Here are three ways to make the most of your vacation on Holbox Island.
Lounge in luxury at Holbox’s beach clubs
The most comfortable way to experience a beach day on Holbox is at one of the island’s numerous beach clubs.
All of them offer loungers. At some, you can also find umbrellas, palapas, hammocks and even Bali-Beds. Most beach clubs are located at beachfront hotels in town, or just to the east or west of town.
Each beach club has its own rules for using their facilities. Some require an hourly or daily rental fee while others ask for a minimum purchase of food and beverages. A few of the most upscale beach clubs only allow their hotel guests to use their amenities.
Rent a hammock on Holbox for shade and ocean breezes
If you want an island beach day in the shade without hurting your budget, Holbox has hammock rental areas for cheap.
For less than $50 pesos per hour (that’s just a couple US dollars), you can rent a cozy, Yucatecan-style hammock in the shade. The hammock areas are rarely crowded, which means you can completely relax in relative privacy.
This is also an excellent option for families with kids. Young ones can take their afternoon nap in the hammocks, or play in the sand without getting too exposed to the sun. Most of the hammock rental areas are located on the beaches on the eastern side of town. They don’t sell food or drinks but feel free to bring a cooler with your own.
Take a walk along the island’s coastline
Holbox’s calm waters and silky sands make it an easy place for a walk on the beach. Stick to the beach in town for people-watching, checking out the local beach clubs, and choosing a beachfront restaurant for lunch.
If you’re seeking unbeatable natural beauty, stroll to the beaches on the east side of town, where you’ll find pristine sandbars just off the shore. You can walk along the coastline with shallow, pool-like water to cool off your feet. The sandbars are also the best location for taking some stunning beach photos during your Holbox vacation.
