Just another reason to love it here! Carnaval is an official Mexican holiday. A five-day celebration prior to the start of Catholic lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday. Commencing the weekend before Ash Wednesday, Carnaval is an exuberant celebration of parades, music, dancing, floats and costumes! Carnaval is celebrated around the world. In New Orleans it is known as Mardi Gras.

In 2020 Carnaval will be celebrated in Mexico beginning February 19 and running through February 26. While Carnaval is officially the five days leading up to Ash Wednesday the liveliest celebrations take place over the weekend.

Merida! Our favorite place to celebrate locally! A colonial city in the heart of the Mayan world, Merida is rich with tradition and celebrations. Merida will crown it’s King and Queen of Carnaval 2020 on February 19. Parades will take place each evening including the Children’s Parade, Fantasy Parade on Saturday and Bachata Parade on Sunday.

Closer to home, Cozumel Carnaval! Hop a ferry from Playa del Carmen and check out the Carnaval events happening in Cozumel. Parades, live music and 5K are all scheduled in Cozumel during Carnaval.
